Externships

Externships offer teachers the opportunity of paid summer employment in challenging and exciting work placements appropriate to their curriculum focus and professional interest for a 5-8 week period during the summer.

 

Through externships, teachers…

  • See math and science principles applied in everyday industry settings
  • Are exposed to the pervasive use of information technologies in data collection, analysis, problem solving and communication—critical skills for the 21st Century
  • Experience the culture of today's workplace, one that emphasizes collaborative teamwork, critical thinking, global perspectives, and multi-media communication

Industry Externship Placements

 

 

Graduate Level Courses

LIFT2 includes a sequence of four online and face-to-face graduate and professional education courses (9 credits) offered through Framingham State College.

 

The courses complement the externship experience and help teachers translate their industry experience into classroom practice.

 

Course Titles and Credit

Communicating and Designing with Technology (2 credits)

Creating a Web-based Learning Environment (2 credits)

Developing Instructional Materials for the Classroom (3 credits)

Understanding and Promoting STEM Careers (2 credits)

 

 

Community of Learners

LIFT2 teachers participate in an ongoing learning community both during and following the thirteen-month program. Their online and face-to-face communication/collaboration sustains and further enhances the impact of the program.

 

During the externship period, teachers engage in online discussions to share and benefit from their individual experiences. The online environment (Blackboard™) also supports two of the four courses offered through Framingham State College.

 

 

Final Work Products

Teachers develop final work products that relate to their classroom instruction. These materials are shared across the LIFT2 online learning community of Massachusetts teachers.
